From the time I was a little girl, I was always in love with the F Scott Fitzgerald's book "The Great Gatsby". There has always been more than just a love story behind it. The book is all about chasing the American Dream, having money, having a family, and having a great career. The ending of the story always made me so sad. (Spoiler Alert), Jay Gatsby is shot and killed in his own home for a crime he didn't even commit. The irony of it all is that Jay Gatsby's lover, Daisy, was the one who commited the crime. After he died, Daisy decided to marry another man, and didn't even attend his funeral. It's a rather sad story! I watched the "Great Gatsby" film the other day and I felt inspired to write a song about it. I wrote the song as if Jay Gatsby were singing to Daisy, after she left him.
So without further adieu, here is my song for Jay Gatsby.
Verse 1:
Your gabeld skies and classic cars, veranda nights and movie stars, sycophants who love to dance and sip your champaign. They chat a smile with shallow eyes, in monotones that hypnotize, they're only cheap mascara lies that run in the rain! You're feeling like your winning, but you're losing the game.
Chorus:
My American Dream, so close, yet so far out of reach
Darling you can have old money and new money but, you can't have me
The American Dream
Verse 2:
I look into the misty night, you're like a glowing green light, mysterious, I wonder if, you're thinking of me.
I guess your mind is somewhere else, like picture frames up on a shelf, with old and tarnished edges, and gilded memories.
I guess you're over missing me.
Chorus:
The American Dream, so close, yet so far out of reach
Darling you can have old money and new money but, you can't have me
The American Dream
